Mercury Machining CNC machining · made to order

Subcontract machining since 1998

Parts to your drawing, to a hundredth.

CNC turning and milling, from a single prototype to a run of a thousand. Every job comes with an inspection report — not just our word that it fits.

What we do

From a single prototype to a production run

We take on single parts too. We know people are waiting for a prototype, so we don't put it at the back of the queue — it's often ready within three days.

CNC turning

Turned parts up to 320 mm in diameter and 900 mm long. Live tooling means milling and drilling are done in one set-up — more accurate and cheaper.

from €42/hour

CNC milling

3-axis and 4-axis, with a 1,000 × 500 mm table. Moulds, flanges, brackets and anything that isn't round.

from €48/hour

Prototypes and one-offs

A single part from a sketch or a sample. If you don't have a drawing, we'll measure the part and draw it — and you get it electronically for the future.

from €60

Production runs

From fifty parts upwards we set up fixtures, which cuts the time per part considerably. For repeat runs we keep the set-up, so the second order is cheaper.

depends on the batch

Repairs and reverse engineering

When the original isn't made any more. We measure the worn part, work out the original dimensions and make a replacement — often cheaper than a whole new assembly.

depending on the extent

Inspection and report

We measure every part, and use statistical sampling on runs. An inspection report comes with every job — it's part of the price, not an extra.

Guide price

Price your part

Enter the material, size and batch. You'll see the price per part and for the whole job — and above all how sharply the price falls with a bigger batch, as the machine set-up is spread out.

Part complexity

Complexity sets both the time per part and the machine set-up time.

Roughly. We use it to work out the material cost, including waste.

What we make it on

Seven machines, all our own. We don't subcontract anything except heat treatment and surface finishing — and even there we have one regular partner.

Quality

How you know it really fits

In engineering this matters more than price. A faulty part in an assembly costs many times more than you'd save on the price per part.

We measure every part

For one-offs, every part; for runs, the first, the last and a statistical sample in between. The measured value goes in the report, not just a tick in a “pass” box.

100% / sampled

A report with every job

With the measured values of critical dimensions, not just a stamp. Customers usually need it for their own records.

included

Material traceability

We keep a mill certificate for every heat. If a problem turns up a year later, we can tell you what material the part was made from and where it came from.

When we make a mistake

We remake it, fast, at our own cost. In twenty-seven years it's happened twelve times, and every time we dealt with it this way.

How it works

Five steps from drawing to delivery

You send a drawing

PDF, DWG or STEP. If you don't have a drawing, bring a sample — we'll measure it and draw it.

We check manufacturability

Sometimes changing one tight tolerance cuts the price by a third. We always put it in the quote as a suggestion.

You get a quote

Within two working days, with the price per part, the total and the lead time. Valid for 30 days.

We make and measure

For a run, we send the first part for approval before making the rest — it's cheaper for both of us.

We deliver with the report

Collected, by courier or in our own van. The inspection report comes with the delivery.

FAQ

What you ask us most often

Will you make a single part?

Yes, it's a normal job for us. For a single part, the machine set-up is most of the price, so the price per part is high — but still cheaper than hunting for an original that isn't made any more. You can compare it nicely in the calculator.

What if I don't have a drawing?

Bring a sample. We'll measure it on the CMM, work out the original dimensions where the part is worn and draw it up. The drawing is yours — for the next order, you just send it.

How accurately can you make it?

Typically ±0.01 mm on CNC machines, and tighter on ground surfaces. But more important than the number is that we actually measure it — accuracy nobody has checked is just a figure in the machine brochure.

Do you do heat treatment and surface finishing?

Not ourselves — we send it to a trusted partner we've worked with for twelve years. It's a separate line in the quote and adds about a week to the lead time. We take responsibility for the result.

What's the usual lead time?

Three to five working days for one-offs, and about ten for runs of up to a hundred. We can nearly always do express within five days, but it means moving someone else back — so it costs extra.

Can you store finished parts for us?

Yes, it's common with repeat orders. We make a bigger batch at once (it's cheaper) and you call it off in parts as you need it. We don't charge for storage for up to three months.
