03The guesthouse
Everything below is included in the price of your stay. You'll get the key to the storeroom at reception when you arrive.
04The house
The house has three floors. On the ground floor are reception, the dining room, the lounge, room 01 and both apartments with their own entrances. Rooms 05 – 08 are on the first floor, rooms 02 – 04 in the attic, and the sauna and plant room in the basement.

Breakfast is included in your stay. We cook dinner from Thursday to Sunday; order by 15:00 on the day.

Breakfast is a buffet in the ground-floor dining room from 7:30 to 10:00, and on the terrace too in summer. If you're setting off early, we'll make you a packed breakfast — just tell reception by 20:00 the day before.
Dinner is served from 18:00 to 20:00 and costs €22 per person, with a choice of meat or meat-free menus. Order by 15:00 on the day.
We can make gluten-free and lactose-free meals — please mention it in your booking. Non-residents are welcome in the dining room too; book a table by phone before 15:00.
We write the menu around what's available that week. Regulars include bone broth, boxty with goat's cheese, pork knuckle roasted in stout and slow-cooked beef with champ. The meat-free menu is usually based on pulses or mushrooms.
Allergens are marked by number on every dish, following the EU list of 14. The regular menu includes 1 cereals containing gluten, 3 eggs, 7 milk, 9 celery and 12 sulphites. The list for the current menu hangs at the dining room entrance, and we'll bring it to your table on request.
From Monday to Wednesday, the nearest place to eat is the pub in Glenridge, 2 km from the guesthouse.

A waymarked trail starts at the guesthouse fence. Paper maps of the area are at reception, and we lend them free of charge.

07A year at the guesthouse
We're open all year apart from two weeks' maintenance in November. We publish the exact dates in September and let guests with bookings know in advance.
Dec – Mar
Crisp, clear days bring the best views from the ridge. We drop walkers at the Kerry Way 4 km away at 8:30 in the morning and collect them at 16:00.
Apr – May
Paths above the treeline can be boggy in places until mid-May, while the valley routes are dry. It's our quietest time of year, and rooms are often free even a week ahead.
Jun – Aug
Breakfast is served on the terrace and the fire pit is lit every evening. The last two weeks of August are the busiest.
Sep – Nov
The red deer rut echoes around the valleys, and mornings on the ridge are often frosty. We light the stove in the lounge from mid-September.
08Reviews
A week after they leave, we text our guests one question. We publish the answers with a first name and the month of the stay, and only ever shorten them.
We didn't arrive until after nine at night. The key was in the key safe by the entrance and they texted us the code, and at 7:30 the next morning we were first down to breakfast.
The van dropped us at the Kerry Way at 8:30 and picked us up at 16:00, so the car stayed outside the house all week. Our boots went in the drying room every evening.
The apartment has two bedrooms, so the children slept separately. They brought a cot at no charge, and firewood for the stove was ready by the door.
We told them about the dog in advance and borrowed a blanket at reception. Dogs aren't allowed in the dining room, so we had breakfast on the terrace, and nobody minded.
We don't edit reviews or pick only the good ones. If something about your stay isn't right, tell reception while you're still here — that's when we can fix it.
09Process
Four steps from enquiry to handing over the key. None of them needs payment in advance — we don't take a deposit for individual rooms.

Fill in the booking form or call reception. We need your dates, the number of guests and the room type.
The form shows a guide price for your stay straight away, dinners included.

We'll get back to you by phone or text, confirming the dates and the exact price for the season, or offering the nearest available dates.
Your booking only stands once we've confirmed it.
03
We'll remind you of your dates and agree an arrival time. That's when to tell us about dinners, a cot, a dog or a lift from the bus stop.
Changing the number of guests is free up to this point.
04
Check-in is from 14:00, and you collect your key at reception. If you arrive late, we'll leave it in the key safe by the entrance and text you the code.
You pay when you leave, by card or in cash; businesses get an invoice.
If the dates you want are taken, we'll offer the nearest available ones and put you on the waiting list. If there's a cancellation, you'll be the first we contact.
09Booking
Choose a room, your dates and the number of guests. You'll see the price right next to the form. We confirm within 24 hours and don't take a deposit.
10Gifts and groups
We issue vouchers for an amount or for a specific stay. Groups can hire the whole house, with dinners and the lounge.

You can order a voucher through the booking form — put the value and the recipient's name in the note.
Eight rooms and two apartments together — up to 30 beds including extra beds. Ideal for a family gathering or a walking weekend.
We can set up the lounge for a meeting of up to 20 people. The rest of the house stays open as usual.
For five rooms or more, we work with a deposit and a fixed guest list. We send the terms in writing before confirming the dates.

Yes, by arrangement in advance. The charge is €10 per dog per night, with no more than two dogs in an apartment. We lend a blanket and a bowl at reception.
Dogs aren't allowed in the dining room, the sauna or the lounge. Please keep dogs on a lead in shared areas; around the house they can roam freely and nobody minds.
There are eight free spaces right by the house, no booking needed. In winter the car park is gritted by 7:00.
When the house is full, there's more parking 100 metres down the lane at the turn-off, also free. Please let us know in advance if you're bringing a trailer or a van.
Yes. A Local Link bus runs from the railway station up the valley, and the stop is a 10-minute walk from the guesthouse. The journey from the station takes about 35 minutes.
If you tell us your arrival time in advance, we'll collect you from the bus stop in our van at no charge. The same goes for your departure.
Partly. Room 01 is on the ground floor, reached through the side entrance with no step; its doors are 90 cm wide and the shower is level-access. Reception, the dining room and the lounge are also on the ground floor with no steps.
The sauna is in the basement, down 12 steps, so it isn't accessible. The other rooms are on the first floor and in the attic, and there's no lift.
The sauna is included in your stay and is heated daily from 16:00 to 21:00. It takes six people, so hours are booked at reception, usually in the morning at breakfast.
Towels are in your room, and you'll get a sheet to sit on at the sauna. Children under 12 only with an adult.
Not for individual rooms — you pay on site by card or in cash. We only ask for a deposit from groups of five rooms or more, and it's 30% of the accommodation price.
We invoice businesses on 14-day terms; we need your billing details before you arrive.
Reception is open until 20:00. Arriving later is no problem — just let us know in your booking or by phone on the day.
We'll leave your key in a key safe by the entrance and text you the code. There's no charge for this.
13Careers
We're a small team where roles overlap. We're looking for people who live nearby or can move here for the season. We provide accommodation during your shifts.
Cooking dinners for 20 to 40 guests, meat and meat-free menus, shopping with the manager. The kitchen is small, so you cook in pairs.

Cleaning rooms and shared areas, changing bed linen, running the laundry. Training takes two days.

The guesthouse is above the village of Glenridge, and the last 2 km of road climb. In winter the lane can be icy early in the morning.
Distances from the guesthouse
Turn off the main road at the bridge in Glenridge and follow the signs for the Kerry Way. The last 2 km climb on a tarmac lane that's gritted by 7:00 in winter.
A Local Link bus runs from the railway station up the valley and takes about 35 minutes. The stop is a 10-minute walk from the guesthouse.
If you tell us your arrival time in advance, we'll collect you from the stop. There's no charge, and the same goes for your departure.
